Iron Maiden is a British heavy metal band that was formed in Leyton, East London in 1975. The band currently have thirty eight albums. These include sixteen studio albums, eleven live albums, four EPs and seven compilations. Iron Maiden are seen as the pioneers of making British heavy metal popular. Despite forming in 1975, they didn't achieve success until the early 80's. It was then that the band released multiple UK and US albums, including The Number of the Beast (1982), Powerslave (1984) and Somewhere in Time (1986). The return of Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith in 1999 as the lead vocalist and lead guitarist brought back the band's popularity. The Book of Souls, their sixteenth and most recent album, was released in 2015. Despite having little support from media channels radio and TV, Iron Maiden are considered one of the most successful heavy metal bands of all time. It was reported in 2015 by The Observer that the band had sold over 90 million copies of albums worldwide. They have won multiple awards, including the Ivor Novello for their interntional achievement in 2002. Iron Maiden have played over 2000 live shows as of 2013. Iron Maiden can often be recognised by their famous mascot Eddie the Head who has appeared in almost all of their album and single art and in their live shows. Eddie has been named the most recognisable heavy metal icon and also one of the most versatile due to each artwork inspired by him being a different form of the monster. Iron Maiden have been influenced by bands and artists such as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Yes, Thin Lizzy, Wishbone Ash, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter, Pat Travers, Ritchie Blackmore, Athur Brown, Ian Anderson and Ian Gillian. Iron Maiden were inducted into the Hollywood Rockwalk in 2005.
